Inheritance

A friend of mine mentioned that everyone should receive an inheritance from their parents because the bible says so.

Proverbs 13:22, A good man leaves and inheritance to his children’s children, but the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous.

Not everyone receives an inheritance from their parents and I really don’t think it’s because their parents weren’t good people. But this is a very interesting verse which lends itself to various interpretations.

There are, of course, many promises in the bible about our spiritual inheritance.

Revelation 21:6-7, And He said to me, “It is done! I am the alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son.”

Hebrews 6:10-12, For God is not unjust to forget your work and labour of love which you have shown toward His name , in that you have ministered to the saints, and do minister. And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end, that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

There are many, many promises in the bible which we can lay a claim to if we are obedient to God’s Word.

Ehesians 1:18, I pray that the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places.

There are many more verses like this one that assures us of a rich inheritance.

Look what Isaiah 54:16-17 says: “Behold I have created the blacksmith who blows the coals in the fire, who brings forth an instrument for his work; And I have created the spoiler to destroy. No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue which rises against you in judgment you shall condemn. This is the heritage of the Lord, and their righteousness is from Me,” Says the Lord.

I looked at these verses and to me it means that having the authority to rebuke the plans of the enemy and to nullify wordd which have been spoken against us as curses is part of our inheritance from God. We know that the way to fight the enemy is through scripture and this is one of the verses which is widely quoted and which has authority. It often happens that one thing after the other starts going wrong, and we can see a pattern in the way things happen. The first thing to do is to make sure we don’t have an open door. Sometimes there is something we aren’t being obedient about or that we are inadvertently neglecting to do or not to do. If we identify something like this we have to resolve to change immediately and ask for God’s forgiveness. He always forgives us if we are sincere in our penitence. Then we can rebuke the devil and he is bound to listen to us because we speak from a righteous place of authority.

I would just like to encourage you with some of my favourite verses:

2 Timothy 1:7. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

Colossians 3:2, Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

Colossians 3:17 and 23, And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. Whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.

Romans 8:28, And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

Romans 8:31, What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

Romans 8:37-39, Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels not principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
